Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Man up already, woman!

Who would I say this to? Oh, um, well, me. I have been waiting for a little old lady in Pella to call me to say she can butcher my birds. Waiting, and waiting, and waiting. And we just are not able to hook up. I sold some of those birds this year, and those folks are also waiting. It has come to the point where I have two choices: refund the money, or just clean the damn birds myself. Ugh. Not what I wanted to do. I needed to learn how, really, though, because I want to be pretty much a self-sufficient homestead at some point, and it makes no sense at all to pay someone to clean the birds. Now for us, it shouldn't be an issue. I just never roast a whole bird. I use pieces at a time so I can skip the defeathering and just skin the things (isn't this pleasant talk;) ). But for the six I sold (and another four, but I was going to ask you what you plan to do with your birds as well, Sarah) to one of the farm share members, it means I am going to have to kill, scald, and pluck the birds. I think I may enlist my sister to help me this weekend, since she cleaned my mom's birds the last time she went through some. It shouldn't' be an issue. I used to help my dad butcher and package deer when he brought them home. I prep the meat to cook it. It is just the whole killing the birds that puts me off. To the point I am seriously considering going vegetarian again. Its all in my head. I also clean fish I catch with no problem. It totally hooked my hubby on me when we were engaged, because not many men get to see their future wives catch a fish, then proceed to slice it open, and take their thumb and push the guts out. Yum. Anyway, it looks to be an interesting weekend. I have not heard from anyone about the farm's harvest party, so I am thinking it will be a chicken cleaning evening, which is open to anyone who cares to learn/help. Doesn't that sound fun?

I welcome hospitable, intelligent discussion. I do not welcome mean-spirited comments. Though they are "moderated" I post pretty much everything, with a very, very small exception-that being spam and those who aim to hurts others intentionally. I'd love hear what you have to say, otherwise!
