Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

It's A Comin'

So for those of you sick of winter, like me...my girls (aka the chickens) are laying again, and pretty well. The ducks have finally started laying also. It is a sure sign spring is just around the corner. I am hoping that the flooding gives us a bit of a break, though, so I get a tiller through the garden plows early. I have major plans for the CSA this year, and there will be so much more food. I also have arrangements for a little family labor help (a niece who has a cell phone bill, lol), so I won't be overwhelmed. I am excited about where this is all going. I think I am really getting the hang of being a farmer again. I am also going to start posting little blips on our journey to "greeness", noting the little things we have done, and are going to do, to help encourage you all that just small steps will make huge differences, and that they are the way to do it. If I tried to do what we currently do all at once, it would be so overwhelming. I am a green type from way back-at 10 I was trying different home concoctions to clean with and out in the garden with my dad, borrowing books on foraging and on. I think it just took me having my own "space" to really pursue it. So one of the first steps we took as a family was as simple as a light bulb-we do use fluorescent bulbs whenever we need to replace bulbs. I know that both incandescent and fl. have their downfalls, but the smaller use of energy will be beneficial as we work on one of our big steps-buying one solar panel a year and having it installed (I found ones that can be strung together little by little) until the back roof is filled. Our ultimate goal is to be off the grid. That will take many years, though, because, like I said, it's all in small steps. The farm money is what I use to make those steps, though.

I welcome hospitable, intelligent discussion. I do not welcome mean-spirited comments. Though they are "moderated" I post pretty much everything, with a very, very small exception-that being spam and those who aim to hurts others intentionally. I'd love hear what you have to say, otherwise!
