Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

I Know, I Know

Like my sister mentioned while we ran all over central Iowa yesterday, it seems like I am always starting my diet again. Here's the deal, though-I get tired with being good all the time. I mean, who doesn't. It isn't necessarily that I fall off and regain, either (though this last time I did-just blatantly ate poorly, though, as I was going through a tough spot). I generally let myself lose around ten to fifteen pounds, then take a break. I get burnt out and regress majorly, otherwise. I think one of the hardest factors for me is that my family eats very well. For one, I cook pretty well. I also already focus on whole foods from scratch. But, I let them eat grain based foods and have no problem with homemade sweets. Those are the two major items that have to be removed from my normal diet in order to lose weight, and two of my favorites. So, here I sit again, poised to start whittling it away again. I have my reasons, the greatest of which is just health. I am open to us having more kids. I won't try until I am at a certain weight, though. As far as looks and such, it would be great to look slimmer, but honestly, that is the least of my worries. I work my tookus off each day. I am not a couch potato. I don't eat a lot of junk food. I know what and how we should eat. It is a simple procedure of cutting out just a couple food groups for awhile. They just happen to be the two most difficult to cut. But, yesterday was the first day of doing so, and two pounds dropped overnight. Maybe if I force myself to check in here until I reach a major goal I will do better. Sorry to bore you with the details of something so slow in movement, but I really want to make it work longer this time.In the meantime, I am less likely to get bored this time, though, as I have discovered some uber-fantastic sites with recipes available for me, who is so very easily bored with making the same thing for dinner all the time. Like tonight's dish, chicken in coconut milk, which smells a lot like Tom Ka Gai, so I am sure will be a winner in my book.

    Abby,
I struggle with this too. I have done WW in the past with great success....but got really busy and put my own health on the back burner for the last 4 years. (Hmmmm does that timing coincide with my 2 youngest kids ages? ;-) Right now I am logging food using the online tool www.sparkpeople.com (I'm JessicaBB)and LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! Also the companion site www.sparkrecipes.com will let you input your own homemade recipes so you can figure the portion/nutrient value/calories etc. It tells me exactly what categories I am eating enough or too much in, so I am working hard on a balanced protein/carb intake. I'm also getting my butt kicked at Farrell's 6 days a week....but that's another story. =) Best wishes,
    J

I have used WW, too, and had good results, but I get so bored with it, and after awhile stop counting. The last couple times I have worked on losing weight again I have used Mercola's No Grain diet, but it was so restrictive, I got bored once again. This time, though along the same lines as Mercola, I am following Jordan Rubin's plan in Perfect Weight America. It is just easier for me because he lays out what you can and can't eat, and then you can pretty much have as much as you need. I have to think a lot less. Oh, but I make the modification of keeping pork in the mix, which he eschews for cleanliness reasons, but we get ours from a *really* reliable source.

I welcome hospitable, intelligent discussion. I do not welcome mean-spirited comments. Though they are "moderated" I post pretty much everything, with a very, very small exception-that being spam and those who aim to hurts others intentionally. I'd love hear what you have to say, otherwise!
